Members reassured a parent asking whether their child's tree nut and peanut allergy means avoiding coconut and nutmeg, with the overwhelming consensus being that neither coconut (a fruit) nor nutmeg (a seed) are true nuts, and most people with nut allergies can safely consume them. Several members shared that they or their children have the same allergies yet eat both coconut and nutmeg without issue, though a few noted personal sensitivities to coconut or concerns about cross-contamination during processing. A recurring theme was the importance of consulting an allergist for personalized testing and guidance, as allergies vary greatly from person to person.

I suspect that is an Allergist question. However my son has the same thing and can eat coconut as well as nutmeg.

I have a close friend that is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. While she can safely eat coconut, she finds that a lot of products use tree nut oils in conjunction with the coconut. Fresh coconut or coconut milk are fine, but she worries about the coconut oils. It is tough to say though - the allergy can be very different from person to person. She didn't mention anything about nutmeg, and I've baked with it many times for her.

Tread with caution, but both should be fine. Neither are actually nuts. Good Luck!

Coconut is a fruit, and nutmeg is a seed. Talk to your allergies about it. I am allergic to tree nuts and I am fine with both.
