Has Anyone Had A Child Grow Out Of A Severe Peanut Or Egg Allergy?

A MyFoodAllergyTeam Member asked a question 💭

My son is 2 years old and has anaphylactic reaction to both peanuts and eggs. I am looking for hope that he may still grow out of these food allergies even though they are more severe.

Thank you so much for this encouraging response! My parents live in Atlanta and I have considered taking my son there for a second opinion. His test results are very high at the moment, but I am hoping we can continue to test and he will eventually grow out of the allergies.

Hi - yes, my child has outgrown both. We did a food challenge around 2.5 years to peanut, which I was resistant to, but he passed. We live in Atlanta and the chief of the allergy department is a peanut expert. He explained to me, that there are about 8 proteins in peanut, and despite the fact that my son had elevated IGE values, the value to the 1 particular protein that typically causes anaphylaxis was low enough for him to consider a challenge. I was terrified, but he was confident, and our child passed.

For egg, he failed the challenge at 2.5 years. He had very high IGE. However about a year and a half later, he had a very small amount of food with baked egg in it. He did not react. Anyhow, I'm not sure when exactly he outgrew his egg allergy due to limited testing during the pandemic, but he outgrew it well before 5. feel free to reach out in case you have other questions.
