Do You Follow A Specific Diet To Help With Food Allergies?
I follow an avoidance diet to the food items I'm allergic to. I rarely eat out and take my own food to family functions.
Most people with multiple food allergies need all the variety they can get. So, when eating at home, I eat everything except my food allergens. Because I am allergic to dairy and eggs, I tend to eat vegan when eating out. It also helps with my red meat allergies. I can eat fish, poultry and a little pork. Then I just watch for carrots, bananas, peanuts, and sunflower seeds, plus oil. I also have to remind everyone that I can't eat anything with gelatin. They usually don't realize that it is made out of beef products. This is why I appreciate that my husband has taken a huge interest in providing me food I can eat and is healthy for me. He does all the grocery shopping and 90% of the cooking. He understands about cross contamination. Eating at home is just so much safer than eating out. I also don't do well with preservatives and artificial food colors. when we travel, we often go to Disney World and on Disney Cruises because they do so well with allergies.
I avoid my food allergens: Fish, shellfish and wheat. I rarely eat poultry and never red meat. I also have followed a low FODMAP diet which starts as an elimination diet and you analytically add foods to learn which cause GI distress. I’ve been doing that for 2 1/2 years and I’ve been able to expand my food variety..
I’m going to add that ALDI doesn’t use artificial colors or preservatives. They have a gluten free section and their foods are clearly marked for allergens. Sprouts is my favorite though. They have entire freezer sections. You have to look for some of them, and I go through the entire store. We just had one open right by my house. I am in Heaven every time I go because it is easy. I get all kinds of things that are “normal” but made for me.
I second Aldi! I really like their gluten free products. I find I do SO much better staying away from all those extra preservatives and artificial colorings. It can't be your only grocery store, but I find all kinds of things I can eat there, at great prices as well!
