What Do You Wish People Would Understand About Having A Food Allergy?
I wish people would understand that it isn't a "choice" or a "diet". My personal favorite is "just have a little bit - you will eventually outgrow it" if I hear that one more time I think I'll choke someone. My son has had 9 trips to the hospital this year alone. Usually after a "well-meaning/or ignorant friend/family member" gives him something. It isn't a choice. It isn't a diet. If it was I would have my face buried in some decadent dessert! It is a necessity.
It's not a fad diet. It's a life threatening allergy that can cause an adverse reaction or make someone sick for days. Social situations are stressful because ppl don't understand or grasp the seriousness. Don't be offended if i dont eat your cooking, i like to live to see another day. :)
CariMinch - I agree with you on so many levels. My family is the worst with "forgetting" certain allergies. I have even given them a spread sheet... with no luck. I totally dread going over to my in-laws family.
So well said of how I feel. Some people have more pain from my allergies than I do. I have never understood this, but it tells me they have some unresolved problems and that I can not take on their problem because mine keeps me 100% busy.
I wish my husband's family would just understand! They tell me every time we get together we have this, this, and this for you. It does not have .... and when I get there its just the opposite! They forgot I was allergic to wheat but they put a wheat crust all over my potato! Really!! But that is okay I bring my own food or I eat before I go. People like to play dumb sometimes.
