Sea Salt/ Shellfish Allergy?

A MyFoodAllergyTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anybody know what makes you allergic to sea salt? Drs don't believe me. I cannot eat shrimp either. Not sure if I have an allergy to shellfish.

On another forum, another person had also had a reaction from sea salt. She went to Mayo Clinic and the doctor had told her that sea salt contains "marine copolymers" (which another doctor told had her was a fancy word for the microscopic shellfish that are contained in sea salt). Could be worth looking into. I didn't know this.

No. She started when she ate prawns, she had been fine eating them for years! but she then just got worse each time she had them. She was on holiday when she had a really bad reaction and then her GP referred her for allergy testing. She waiting months for it as we all know the nhs waiting times! She had to go to Oxford hospital for the day and was given about 30 tests on both arms. Once finished and they looked at reactions she got a whole list of things she can now never eat again, not only shellfish!

Was she tested for sea salt specifically or only shellfish? I would like to have an epi pen if possible because of the severity. I really believe it is going to be dangerous for me eventually but cannot get doctors to believe me.

My daughter has this and was told her allergy is in the thousands and if she eats shellfish it could kill her. You need to ask for an allergy test as it turns out she is now allergic to a lot of things!! She has to carry an epi pen with her.
