I can’t do allergy shots. I had anaphylactic shock when they did all the testing. For everything. Face swelled up. Throat and ears closed up. They tried to dilute them but ended up with 6 vials and said we don’t recommend continuing. It’s not going to help.

I too have never heard of doing it for food allergies. Avoidance is the treatment for food allergies, and yes, it can be difficult if it is not a top 10 allergen.

It is apparently much easier to do immunotherapy in the USA. No importing and insurance often pays for it. Some people go from bottle to bottle with no problem. I have been getting allergies shots for 43 years and just hit maintenance last week. It has really helped me tremendously!

Hi Jeri' I am not sure if they make them for food allergies and for which ones. I know they make them for inhalation that you can't avoid. I had the therapy for bermuda grass en for dog dander. Here is how it works in South Africa. First you need to visit an Andrology Clinic, they administer allergy tests and therapies. Because these meds are made in France and is not FDA approved, you have to apply for a special license to import it. Ti's is a costly excersise. Then you wait for a couple of weeks as they mis it according to your test results and specifically for you. Plus it needs to pass through customs. Here you pay import tax again. This is on top of the ampule costs. Then you start therapy. First ampule is once a week for six weeks I think then it becomes bigger intervals with larger doses. It takes about 2 to 3 years of therapy to become desensitized. Every sixth injection you need a new batch. In 2011 and 2012 I used to cost me about R1600 for the ampules, plus R300 for the import license and R600 for the import tax every six weeks. And then I had to take time off work on a Tuesday morning (in the afternoon they only do kids) to go for treatment. You can't go at another time as they have to have a ER doctor available incase someone gets anaphylaxis and need to be resuscitated. Then being injected you get an icepack to put on your arm as it swells and itches' and you have to sit and wait to see if you react until they are satisfied that you are okay to leave. Usually about 30 minutes to an hour.

Hope this helps. I went to the Andrology clinic from Du Buisson and Partners in Pretoria South Africa
